OFF THE WALL (WINDOW) IDEAS THAT PUT KEN BROWN STUDIO ON THE MAP.

This bathroom shutter was the forerunner of numerous items I addressed and took to the postal clerk, unwrapped, to be delivered that way.  You see the $1.00 stamp above, which was the amount of FIRST CLASS POSTAGE it took to mail 22 of these to a very targeted audience in 1973.  It was our promotion to get dealers and distributors to our first-time booth at the HOBBY INDUSTRIES OF AMERICA show in Chicago.

The extremely short version of the story is that 19 came to our booth where we were selling Calligraphy prints.  Prints! Paper prints. We were barely established but had sold a few thousand in the Dallas area.  One of the 19 buyers who got a personalized shutter just like this one came to our booth.  He was the buyer for a chain of garden and craft stores, FRANK’S NURSERY, based in Detroit.  The buyer gave us a purchase order for 10,000 prints, selected from samples on the walls of our small booth. It was the mother lode!  The chain of about 4 dozen stores bought prints for the whole chain steadily over the next 7-8 years.

The shutter.  The idea.  The personalization on it.  The stamp.  The mailing, unwrapped.  All a series of magical steps that worked flawlessly.  Without reservation, I can say this, almost alone, launched us into the arts and crafts business where we flourished from 1973 through 2005.  Overlapping the fading away of the print sales was the dental drill.  You know the rest of that story.
